Our guide to choosing the right rug
A Huge Thank You!
Spooky season is fast approaching, and I for one am relishing the crisp autumn days, seasonal walks, and cosy nights in. But before we get swept up in all things interiors (and in particular the importance of rugs!), we have a huge thank you to share.
At the end of September, we hosted our second Macmillan Coffee Morning, and it was a resounding success. Together, with your generosity and goodwill, we raised an incredible £600. Your kindness has made a real difference, and we are so grateful for your support.
So, what have we got to look forward to in the world of interiors this autumn? To kick off the cosy home season, we're turning our attention to rugs - and how they can instantly elevate and enhance your home.
A Guide to Choosing the Right Rug
A carefully chosen rug can completely transform a room, helping to unlock its full potential. Whether you’re drawn to bold, statement-making patterns or prefer something simpler, a rug offers the perfect opportunity to set the tone. Beyond aesthetic value, rugs bring practical benefits too - they are good insulators to help warm those chilly nights and they help trap dust particles, making the air a little cleaner. Beautiful and practical? We call that a win-win.
Of course, finding the perfect rug isn’t just about looks - it’s a balancing act between beauty and practicality. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Placement: Rugs near doors or outside should be easy to clean (especially if little feet or paws are involved!). This will save you time, effort and stress in the long run.
Durability: High-traffic zones such as hallways or kitchens need rugs that can handle everyday wear and tear. Materials like jute or sisal are perfect here, and will stand the test of time while keeping their style.
Budget & materials: Natural fibres like wool or cotton add wonderful texture and quality but usually come with a higher price than synthetic alternatives.
Design & atmosphere: Light, neutral tones create an open, airy feel - perfect for a relaxed vibe. Conversely, darker and richer shades can ground a room, adding depth, drama and character.
And then there’s size - the most important choice of all. A well-sized rug brings balance to a room, and to create harmony I would recommend running it parallel to a focal furniture piece. In dining rooms, ensure the rug is large enough to allow chairs to be pulled out comfortably without catching the edges. In bedrooms, think of the rug as a picture frame for your bed - creating a stylish border. A simple trick before you buy? Use newspaper or masking tape to map out the rug’s dimensions on the floor, so you can visualise exactly how it will sit in your space.
Jacaranda Rugs
We’re thrilled to announce a new collaboration with Jacaranda to deliver bespoke luxury carpets and rugs. Their custom made designs offer complete freedom when it comes to composition, colour shape and size - each piece made to suit your space perfectly. Many of their designs are handwoven on traditional wooden looms, operated entirely by hand without electricity. The result? Fabrics full of character - each a work of art.
Richard Meager founded the company in 2003 after a chance meeting with this stunning handcrafted product. Initially Richard and his wife Lucy ran the company from a spare room in their home, but over the last 22 years they have expanded into a purpose-built distribution centre and workshop. Now they are well established and distribute to over 40 countries worldwide including most of Europe and North America.
Central to the company, and one of the reasons why we are proud to partner with them, is their commitment to doing good for both people and the planet. In 2009 Jacaranda joined Goodweave, founded by Nobel prize winner Kailish Satyarthi, which works to eradicate child labour in textile weaving and ensure fair treatment of adult carpet weavers. Furthermore in early 2022 Jacaranda signed up to the UN’s race to zero campaign through the SME Climate Hub, with the company working towards reaching net zero by 2040. This preservation of the traditional art of fabric weaving with forward-thinking responsibility makes this company both timeless and relevant.
We have a selection of their samples in the studio and look forward to incorporating their designs into our projects.
We wish you a cosy autumn full of warmth and colour. With the clocks going back, our next issue will ‘shine a light’ on all things lighting - we can’t wait to share it with you!
Best wishes
